Opinion: What Can Bethesda do Differently with Fallout and Elder Scrolls

Things have changed since Fallout: New Vegas released in 2010 and things have certainly changed since Fallout 4 released last November, open world games have changed and now The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is the best RPG since Fallout 3 and Skyrim. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt promised it was the next-generation of role-playing games and it delivered, CDPR beat Bethesda at their own game and blew them out of the water, not only does it redefine an RPG game, it redefines what it means to be important.

Everything in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt feels important, and it feels necessary. The characters, the settings, and the side-stories all feel important, it’s there for a reason and everything felt perilous. There was a threat, The Wild Hunt and the Vampires of Beauclair and everything mattered, the ending mattered, your decisions mattered, and how you respond to things mattered, there wasn’t black and white like in Fallout or Elder Scrolls, you didn’t know what you were doing was good or bad.

No matter what you do in The Witcher 3, the world changes around you and reacts to you unlike in Fallout or The Elder Scrolls where everything stays the same: It’s a static world and you’ll never feel important. Is there a reason to go find Shaun? Not really, you can just go and just do whatever you want, or is there a reason to go find Alduin in Skyrim? Not really. Nothing feels necessary in Fallout or The Elder Scrolls, you can kill a bunch of people in a town and the next time you step in, nobody bats an eyelid at you and acts like everything is normal after you just murdered the entire town.

Compare that to The Witcher, you can’t say the same. The opening of The Witcher 3 gives you meaningful choices then in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. You see the consequences of your actions in The Witcher 3, Yennifer and Triss will pull away if you don’t feel attracted to them, you’ll see towns and villages turned around from your actions,  and you’ll see certain characters be affected by your choices, everything is important in The Witcher 3.

I want to see what will Bethesda do to make things different in Fallout 5 , or in a Fallout: New Vegas style game. I would love for them to make the game like The Witcher 3 instead of static-ness and nothing feels important.

I would love for them to give us an actual reason to go do the storyline then just go and do whatever you want and I want them to make us feel important, make our decisions important, make the world important and the world around you changes based on your actions, make it feel memorable and also in it’s own way crucial to the storyline, I would love to walk around the post-apocalyptic wastes of America, and feel like I did something meaningful instead of just completing the main quest and everything goes back to normal with a few characters talking about what you did.

With Fallout 4 wrapped up, I would like to see if Bethesda can look out the window and see what they can be inspired by from The Witcher 3 and CD Prokject Red.
