Scary games have been a passion of mine since playing F.E.A.R way back in 2005 and also entering the Condemned fanbase with the original Condemned around the same year, I have always enjoyed horror games for some reason or another; perhaps it is that I like to get scared often when I’m playing games. Here is the 10 moments in gaming that I found scary or scared me;

10) The Crawlers: Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 was an incredible horror game from the year 2011. It gave way to a new standard in the horror genre and for good reason. As Issac, you must make your way through Titan Station and in one part of the game, you have entered an abandoned elementary school. As you move further into the complex, you see a tiny shape move rooms and as soon as you enter the classroom, you’re attacked by Crawlers which are children that have long nails and shriek to warn others of your presence. As the lights flicker and the room has gone dark, you must fight them off as they pour out of the darkness.

9) Alma Appears: F.E.A.R

F.E.A.R has a special place in my heart, it is the first game that got me into the horror genre and it was a very special game. The spooky little girl with long black hair has long been a trend in horror cinema and games as a whole but when F.E.A.R released in 2005 to acclaim and numerous awards, it felt fresh. Alma was the antagonist of the FEAR trilogy, and she was a nasty habit of appearing in front of you. In the original game, the point man climbs a ladder and she is right in front of you and disappears. The part of the game and many other parts scared the pants right off me.

8) The Hospital: FEAR: Extraction Point

F.E.A.R: Extraction Point was a really good expansion to the original F.E.A.R, I think it is one of the best expansions I’ve ever played. At the end of the expansion, you had to enter the hospital to get extraction out of the city and this was super spooky. I haven’t forgiven Monolith.

7) The Department Store: Condemned: Criminal Origins

It would be an injustice if I didn’t the Department Store level in Condemned. Hearing that soft Christmas and soft Jazz music was so unsettling, and walking around in the dark was super scary. There is this one moment if you go exploring and you go by the upper balcony at the beginning of the chapter, you will experience a laugh so scary that your entire hair on your body will go up and you will get the willy nillies. Spooky, indeed.

6) The Nest and the Xenomorph: Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation released three years and won my Game of the Year for 2014. It is one of the scariest games I’ve ever played, and it’s the first one that has made justice to the Alien franchise. The Xenomorph was predictable, intelligent and a very good foe. Towards the end of the game, you must head down into the nest which is filled with facehuggers and xenomorphs. It’s here that you must sneak past the two xenomorphs and facehuggers, creepy indeed.

5) The Entirety of Condemned: Criminal Origins

Okay, not the entire game was terrifying but it did feel spooky. There was a section in the game where it definitely was terrifying, in the level of St. Joseph’s Secondary School you must find the body and you enter the locker room: You’re zooming into some macabre images with your state of the art, 2005 police technology and the body comes to life and grabs you. I still haven’t forgotten, speaking of Condemned: Where is Condemned 3 at?

3) The Medical Pavilion: BioShock

BioShock is a fantastic horror game and a great mixing of different genres, I never seen anything like it before. It has some of the best atmospheric world and sound design in gaming. The leaking halls of Rapture, lit by the soft glow of the ocean outside, is home to the Medical Pavilion: the second level in the game.

The Medical Pavilion is a spooky place. It’s 1940’s aesthic and art deco design pop and this is where you encounter a very good jump scare: In Dandy Dental, you come across a gene tonic and as soon as you pick it up: the room is filled with steam and you turn around, the friendly neighborhood dentist is behind you.

2) The Bear: Condemned 2: Bloodshot

Condemned 2 was a very good game, it was a good horror game although it did have some action scenes. One part that I always remember is the lodge level of the game, after going through some soldiers and fighting your way across the lodge: A bear appears and you must flee for your life and that part was frightening and cool at the same time. I died numerous times.

1)Ravenholm: Half Life 2

Ravenholm was the best part of Half Life 2, also it was the most iconic level outside of the entire game itself. After the level in the laboratory, you notice a door and Alyx Vance says to you that the door leads to the town of Ravenholm. Valve’s shooter isn’t a horror game but it has horror aspects in it, like Ravenholm. The moonlit town is crawling with zombies and a crazy priest that wants to help you.

I still remember that fast zombie that crawls on all fours and jumps at you. As soon as you run out of ammo, you must the iconic gravity gun to fight your way out of Ravenholm. What a great game, Half Life 2 is.

  1. 8 and 7 vanished! Is that just how scary they are? 😉
God, Ravenholme still creeps me out when I play Half-Life 2. And the Alien in Alien: Isolation caused my wife to yell “Oh, shit!” as it leapt down from a vent thankfully not waking our daughter in the process. So I certainly agree with some of those!

    • Crap! I forgot about 8 and 7, might need to go back and edit. I’m going through Half Life 2 again for the 100th time and I’m about to reach Ravenholm, I might just turn on God Mode and see what’s up.

I’m getting flashbacks to the nest and the Facehuggers that leap at you, UGHHHH.
