Scorpio: Will it Have the Games?

On Thursday, Digital Frontier shared an in-depth look at the internal specs of Project Scorpio, the third iteration of the Xbox One that’s set to release this November, if rumors are to be believed. This new Xbox is a monster of a machine with that said, what does Microsoft have to do to sell this thing and will Scorpio matter if has any first-party games?

Alot of things have changed in the four years since the new generation began but the question remains will regular people care about it and where are the games at? Playstation is bringing out the games like Horizon, Persona 5, Uncharted 4, and much more and Xbox doesn’t have anything just outside a handful of games like Halo, Forza, Gears, Cuphead, Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and plenty of games and this time Halo isn’t going to cut it.

Microsoft is grasping for air when it comes to first-party games and the only thing that they showed to Digital Foundry was Forza, Forza may be good but it’s not going to cut it when Playstation has heavy hitters like Horizon, Uncharted, Spiderman, God of War, and The Last of Us Part II and Microsoft needs new exclusives to show off on the Scorpio more than fancy upgrades to franchises that have been around for a mere 10 years. Sony is enjoying success because of software and will benefit from the deals that come out of Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: 2017 with new expansions arriving first on the system, then there’s Persona 5, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Gravity Rush 2, Spiderman, and plenty more software that is coming to the Playstation in the years to come.

Those exclusives aren’t always the biggest games but they offer diversity and a slow and steady drip of high quality games that aren’t just racers and shooters and that’s a huge advantage over the hand of cards that Microsoft has.  It’s a massacre and Microsoft can’t do anything to stop it unless they bring out the games.

Sony has found success with Playstation VR and the power of the PS4 Pro makes games like Horizon, Uncharted 4, Resident Evil 7 and VR games look much better and the Playstation 4 itself has had a significant lead on Xbox for the past four years, basically making Sony the winner of this generation and it’s extremely likely that the Pro is going to be less expensive then the Scorpio. Gamers are somewhat ambivalent to 4K and HDR games, they look great but the technology is still competing with 1080p and majority of people have 1080p displays and noone seems to go out and purchase a 4K display and you can’t show someone the power of 4K unless you have a 4K display and that was the reason why the Playstation 4 Pro reveal in September was such bullshit, this battle is going to be with 1080p.

Yes, having the most powerful piece of hardware is a talking point and it sounds like a good upgrade to your existing library and upcoming games than the bump of the PS4 Pro but power isn’t everything, especially when your competition is murdering you. The PS4 earned that lead at E3 2013 when Microsoft butchered their E3 conference and the fact that the PS4 was more powerful and less expensive then the Xbox One was, I agree certainly 100% that Microsoft will reclaim the lead this Holiday when it comes to power.

Microsoft needs to come out at E3 2017 and basically blow people’s mind when it comes to first-party exclusives and having games like Red Dead Redemption 2 for example running on the Scorpio. They have to bring the pain and make sure that people have enough exclusives to play on the Scorpio that you can’t get anywhere else. That means new franchises, existing games in existing franchises, and convincing people that this new console is worth getting for this or for that, and not just games looking like they’re on a maxed out PC.

Specs are just numbers on graph paper, it doesn’t really matter to the regular people like myself who just wants to see what Microsoft has to offer when it comes to exclusive games, and that requires to have first-party new franchises and announcing games that we haven’t seen in quite a while. The Xbox One has been hurting when it comes to first party exclusives, especially when “Scalebound.” was cancelled haven’t really helped, we haven’t heard nothing on Crackdown 3 and franchises like Halo and Gears haven’t had the impact they once had back in the late ‘2000s to the early parts of the 2010’s decade with games like Halo 3, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, and Gears 3 respectively.

This machine is going to be a very powerful weapon in the end run but the ammunition needs to be there in order for the weapon to have an impact, and that ammunition will need to come from first-party games.

  1. Agreed. They need something impressive to really show it off. If Crackdown 3 comes along at the same time that may be a start.

    • Definitely if Crackdown 3 releases this year alongside the Scorpio as a launch title then that will be a start. But you know what would be killer if Microsoft drops a Last of Us or Uncharted style exclusive that isn’t Tomb Raider at E3, and shows off new franchises and bring back Fable, if it can be done.

I saw fanart of a Fable reboot that if made possible would be made by CDPR, that would be amazing if Microsoft could work with CDPR for a reboot of Fable or give the rights to Rare. They need games, new exclusives or otherwise but I can’t stress this enough: Scorpio won’t be anything if there isn’t games to play it. The specs are like the gravy on a Salisbury Steak, right? Now, I want my mashed potatos, my broccoli and my Salisbury Steak, I want the full plate.

      • A big surprise killer app would go some way to helping. A new IP is what they really need right now since Scalebound died.

      • Definitely, especially a new franchise. Several actually would do wonders for the system, and if it was a new franchise that dropped this year ala Fallout 4 then that would be surprising and killer. Microsoft needs to do something on this front or else, they’ll continue to be left behind on the games front and Scorpio will seem to be like a waste of hardware. Power isn’t everything, it’s Games that sell the product.
